The period of stay for those with “College Student” status is 6 months, 1 year, 1 year and 3 months, 2 years, or 2 years and 3 months. Extending this period requires you to go to an immigration bureau to make an application on or before the expiration date of the period (applications are accepted three months prior to the expiration date) (“Application for Extension of Period of Stay”). The certificates necessary for this application are available at your School/Graduate School office or the certificate-issuing machines on campus. Listed below are the documents necessary for this application.
【Regular students and non-degree students】
Application for Extension of Period of Stay : Available at immigration bureaus and at the Center for International Education.
Passport, Certificate of Alien Registration (alien registration card), and fee (4,000 yen)
Certificate of Enrollment: Available at certificate-issuing machines (200 yen per certificate).
Transcript or Certificate of Course Registration: Available at certificate-issuing machines (200 yen per certificate) (or a Certificate of Course Registration (Notification of Course Registration Results) issued by your School/Graduate School if you are a first-year regular student or non-degree student)
Statement of Financial Resources: the form is available at the Center for International Education.
Documents related to the defrayment of expenses
 
  • Bank balance certificate (request one at your bank.)
  • Certificate of Scholarship (request one at the Scholarships and Financial Assistance Section, Student Affairs Division. If you receive a scholarship offered by a private association, you need to directly request it from the private organization.)
  • Copy of your passbook (bank book) or other statement that shows the monthly balance of your bank account, including the receipt of remittances from home.
  • Agreement for Defraying Expenses (the form is available at the Center for International Education) *You must submit this document unless you intend to defray expenses by yourself.

<Notes>
1.All documents to be submitted must be prepared or issued within six months before submission.
2.All documents prepared in a foreign language must be accompanied by a Japanese translation.。
3.You may be required to submit other documents for reference.
4.Your period of stay may not be extended for reasons such as poor grades or unpaid tuition fees.

* If your period of stay is extended, you must submit to your School/Graduate School office a Certificate on Registered Matters of Alien Registration or copies of both sides of your Certificate of Alien Registration, on which the new period of stay is recorded.
