Regulations on Waseda University Studying Abroad
These regulations are for students studying abroad while registered at Waseda University.
 
[General]
Article 1 These regulations apply to undergraduate/graduate students who are going to study abroad. There are some exceptions.
2 The first item applies to the students studying at our university under the exchange agreements with domestic universities.
 
[Definition of the studying abroad】
Article 2 As per the regulation defining studying abroad, all the below are to be included.
  1 Those who study at Universities or equivalent higher education institutions overseas for a year or one term/semester with the permission of the Faculty Committee of his/her undergraduate/graduate school(if they do not belong to any faculty, permission should be made by their graduate school faculty committee. Hereinafter referred to as "The Faculty Committee or relevant committees")
  2 Those who are registered for a year or one term/semester, research or participate in research at the research institution overseas with the permission of The Faculty Committee or relevant committees.
2   In this study abroad program, participants maintain their status as registered students at Waseda University while receiving permission to study abroad for credit at a host university. This regulation is based on the "Double Degree Study Abroad Program" academic exchange agreement with the partner university in question.
 
[Necessary procedures for studying abroad]
Article 3 Those who are going to study abroad must submit the following documents and then the Faculty Committee or relevant committees will give them permission.
1 Designated application form from the appropriate the undergraduate/graduate school
2 Letter of acceptance, a school letter and others issued by the host university, equivalent higher institution or research institution abroad (Hereinafter called "the host university and other host institutions").
2 Returned students must submit the following documents upon returning to Japan.
1 The designated notification of return form of the undergraduate / graduate school
2 The certificate issued by the host university or other host institutions which clearly states the period of his/her registration at the host university or other host institutions abroad.
 
[The period of the studying abroad]
Article 4 The program is up to one year while remaining registered at Waseda University. However, extension or re-entry is permitted by faculty committee under special circumstances.
2 Notwithstanding the first item, the period of studying abroad is defined according to the agreements between Waseda University and the host institutions.
 
[Registering period abroad and registration at Waseda University]
Article 5 The period of studying abroad can be calculated into the number of years of his/her registration at Waseda University only when the Faculty Committee or relevant committees approve.
 
[Credits earned while on the programs]
Article 6 Credits earned at the host university or other host institutions can be counted towards his/her Waseda University's credits only when the Faculty Committee or relevant committees recognizes them.
2 Here is the maximum number of transferable credits
  1 No more than 60 for undergraduate students
2 No more than 10 for graduate students
 
[Study hours before and after the program]
Article 7 Study hours at the undergraduate/graduate school before and after the program will be summed up as much as possible in order to help students earn credits for their graduation.
 
[Tuition fees while on the program]
Article 8 Study abroad students whose programs are less than one year (exchange students and double degree students who participate in study abroad programs are exempt. The same for the following clause.) will be exempt from the following tuition during their study abroad programs.
1 Tuition fees
2 Facility fees
3 Laboratory fees (except for laboratory fee and experiment instruction fee for Education Major at School of Education Social, English Language and Literature and school of commerce)
4 Seminar Fees and Laboratory fees (except for the Laboratory fees for the students entered for the professional course of the graduate school of commerce)
5 Library fees
2 The tuition for study abroad students whose study abroad period exceeds one year is separated based on the following conditions. Study abroad students from Waseda University are exempt from tuition stipulated in articles.
1 This is the stipulated tuition for a one year study abroad program as per the previous clause.
2 For study abroad periods of less than two years, tuition will be half of the total stipulated in the previous clause of Article 1, in Article 2 and the tuition total as stipulated by Article 3 ,Article 4 and Article 5.

The tuition for exchange students depend on stipulations in academic agreements .

Students who participate in the double degree program must pay a registration fee of 150000 Yen.
2 In addition to the registration fee that must be paid by double degree students, there may be cases where additional fees must be paid depending on stipulations in academic agreements.
 
[Cancellation of the admission]
Article 9 If a nominated student is found to be inappropriate due to the Article 2, the Faculty Committee can cancel his/her admission.
2 Article 8 is not applied to the students whose admissions are cancelled under the preceding paragraph.
 
[Special Circumstances]
Article 10 In case you are to graduate from the University within the term of studies including the period of the study abroad since the Faculty Committee approves the credits you earned on the program, one year or one term/semester spent on the program are to be calculated into your registration period at Waseda University.
2 If those whose tuition fees and other expenses are exempted according to the first item of Article 8 one can graduate as per the previous item, exempted class fees and facility fees from tuition fees should be paid.

  Appendix
[Execution date]
1 This regulation is enforced as of April 1 1997.
[Interim measure]
2 This amended regulation applies to prospective students who enrolled in the University from the 1997 academic year. The previous regulation applies to the students who are enrolled in the University prior to the 1996 academic year.
Appendix (July 15 1998 Regulation 98-34)
[Execution date]
1 This regulation is enforced as of April 1 1999.
[Interim measure]
2 This amended regulation applies to prospective students who enrolled in the University from the 1999 academic year. The previous regulation applies to the students who enrolled in the University prior to the 1998 academic year.
  Appendix (February 29 2000 Regulation 99-50)
This regulation is enforced as of April 1 2000.
  Appendix (July 25 2000 Regulation 00-25-3)
This regulation is enforced as of April 1 2001.
  Appendix (October 19 2000 Regulation 00-34-3)
This regulation is enforced as of April 1 2001.
  Appendix (July 23 1998 Regulation 04-21)

This regulation is enforced as of July 23 2004. The regulation for the students registered at Waseda University who are to study abroad after the regulation revised and the prescription of detailed rules on tuition fees and other expenses at the undergraduate school and the graduate school apply to the students who were enrolled after the 2004 academic year.
This regulation comes into effect on September 16 2004.
