Waseda University offers various programs and encourages Waseda students to study abroad while enrolled at the University. In the following pages you will find general outlines for each program. Please note that some points vary for each graduate/undergraduate school. You should contact to your faculty office for the further details. Different studying abroad regulations are applied to the students enrolled before the 1998 academic year and after the 1999 academic year. The followings are for those after the 1999 academic year. Please contact to your office if you enrolled before that.
Registration Status at Waseda While Abroad
When you study abroad, the state of your enrollment at Waseda University varies depends on the programs or the courses you take. Please make sure how you are registered while you are away because your tuition fees vary accordingly.
You will be registered as "studying abroad" from "currently registered at Waseda University" once you meet the following requirements: Your period of study abroad is as regulated mentioned in the next guide line, you have already been admitted by the host institution and you have completed the studying abroad procedures at your school office. For an exchange program, you are not permitted to study abroad with the state of "registered at university" or "a leave of absence". However, in case of TSA and ISA, you are registered as ""registered at university". Therefore, "studying abroad" means privately funded students or exchange students and ""registered at university" means TSA, ISA, and Double Degree programs.
Some private funded students who mainly learn a foreign language from half a year to one year may be registered as "leave of absence" not as "studying abroad" in some schools. Some students may be registered as "leave of absence" because they don't meet the requirements to be approved as studying abroad. Those students have to pay tuition fees according to "leave of absence" regulations. Tuition fees for the host institution and the amount of half semester of Waseda University's tuition fees should be paid. Please note that credits you earned while registered as "leave of absence" are not recognized.
Here is the data you can refer to on how you will be registered. Please talk to your school office to make sure how you will be registered.
(Students who enrolled at Waseda in and after 2006 should refer to separate guidelines for information regarding privately financed study abroad.) |

Tuition fees can be paid in the following three ways. Please note that you will not have to make any additional payments following your return to Japan or upon graduation even though you will be graduating in the prescribed four year period if credits are recognized from your study abroad university.
|
| (1) |
Your tuition fees can be paid to your respective faculty or research institution. You are not required to pay tuition during your study abroad program. (this refers to most exchange programs and double degree programs)
|
| (2) |
The program fee, which is agreed upon after discussion between Waseda University and its partner universities, is paid directly to Waseda University. This fee is used to pay for both program development and operating costs at the partner university. Some partner universities, such as some TSA and ISA universities, include the costs of food and accommodation in their program fees, however this is not always the case. Please be sure to refer to the cost breakdown for more details.
|
| (3) |
You must pay tuition fees directly to the university in which the study abroad is taking place. In this case you do not have to pay tuition to Waseda University. (this refers to some exchange programes)
Please make note of the above differences, that depending on the study abroad country that living expenses will vary. This includes accommodation, food costs as well as other individual costs. Expect to pay between 2.5 million yen and 6 million yen.
|
| In case of private-funded study abroad, the conditions of tuition varies depending on enrollment status. |
