Waseda University was founded in 1882. Since its establishment, Waseda has been sending its students around the world, while at the same time actively welcoming international students from around the globe. Significantly, this tradition of openness to the world continues to the present day.
Unravel the threads of Japanese history and travel back to the period when Japan sent envoys to the Sui dynasty in China -- Buddhist monks, the then educated class, traveled to China for studies, risking their lives in an era of undeveloped transportation and communication. Furthermore, following the end of Tokugawa's Regime in 1867 and the beginning of the Meiji Period (1868-1912), young students traveled to Western Europe, whether with state missions or by their own desire, to learn top-caliber technology and systems. It could be said that these young people were the leaders of the age.
The circumstances of overseas travels have changed in recent years. Japan's years of fast-paced economic growth after the end of World War II made traveling abroad a commonplace phenomenon. Moreover, with the advent and rapid evolution of information technology like computers and the internet, we can now get access to abundant amounts of information in real time, making travel safe and fast. In today's modern world, we need to rethink the "meaning and significance of study abroad", returning to our original ideas about overseas studies.
Each of Waseda University's study abroad programs will give you an irreplaceable, once in a lifetime, precious experience, which will without a doubt become your own personal treasure. By seeing with your own eyes, and experiencing for yourself different cultures, the vastness of the world, advanced ideas and top-caliber individuals, not only can you expand your vision and ways of thinking, but you can also rediscover and reorient yourself with your bolstered self-confidence.
In order not to miss out on such a valuable opportunity and to maximize the fruitfulness of the experience, it is important to prepare carefully and have a strong awareness of all relevant information on study abroad. It is not an exaggeration to say that success of your study abroad depends on your own preparation through thorough research and solid planning. I strongly recommend that you ask yourself the following questions and begin planning: Why study abroad? Who for? Whom should I be grateful to for the opportunity to study abroad?
To enrich your study abroad experience it is not sufficient to rely on support from Waseda University. Rather, you must be proactive. It is essential to make stalwart relationships and good friends with whom you can exchange helpful information and advice. Moreover, there is great advantage for you and your host university's students in sharing your knowledge of Japan. The students at the host university will be genuinely interested in and have a thirst for knowledge about Japan. As a result of this exchange, you will have more favorable chances of making true friends.
I sincerely hope that you will enjoy a wonderful study abroad experience through Waseda University. The Center of International Education (CIE) will make the utmost efforts to support you throughout your study abroad program. |
