Extension of Period of Stay
Permission to study in Japan (Visa Status: College Student) is given for a period of 6 months, 1 year, 1 year and 3 months, 2 years, or 2 year and 3 months. The application can be accepted 3 months prior to the current visa expiration date and must be submitted by the expiration date.The necessary certificates can be obtained from each undergraduate/graduate school office or from the automated certificate-issuing machines on campus. Please see page 99 for“How to obtain certificates”.
Normally, the following documents are necessary when applying for an extension of stay.

(1) Application for Extension of Period of Stay: This is available at the Immigration Office, or the CIE, Waseda University.
(2) Passport, Foreign Resident Registration Certificate (a plastic card), and \4,000 for Immigration procedure fees.
(3) Certificate of Enrollment: This form is issued from the automated certificate-issuing machine. Fee: \200.
(4) Transcript: This form is issued from the automated certificate-issuing machine.
(5) Statement of Financial Resources: This is available at the CIE office.
(6) Documents concerning defraying expenses
  1. Bank balance certificate (it can be requested at the bank)
  2. Certificate of Scholarship (you can request at Scholarships and Financial Assistance Section, Student Affairs Division. ** For students receiving scholarships from private organizations, please receive the certificate from them.)
  3. A photocopy of your monthly bank statement, which shows the steady flow of income to your bank account (e.g. transfer of money from abroad etc.)
  4. Agreement for Defraying Expenses: This is available at the CIE office.
    *Please submit this form unless you are self-financing.
In case of first-year students who have no record or non-degree students, a certificate of course registration will be issued in place of the transcript from each undergraduate/graduate school office.Fee: \200.
[Notice]
A. All submitted documents should be issued within 6 months.
B. All documents in foreign languages should be translated into Japanese.
C. Other documents may be required by the officer in charge for more detailed screening.
D. You may not be granted an extension in case of failure to obtain a passing grade or to pay the tuition.
E. If you ask someone as your proxy for the application, he/she will be required to submit the copies of his/her passport (one with personal information and one with visa).
F. They may require you to present documents in addition with the above.
