Change of Residence Status
In order to receive sholarships, you need to obtain "Ryugaku (student)" visa.
If your current visa status is "Shugaku (pre-college student)", it will be regarded as "Ryugaku (student)" visa so there will be no necessity for you to change your visa status. (As of July 1st 2010)
  1. Application form for change of status of residence<PDF>
     (University's seal is now required.)
  2. Passport, Alien Registration Certificate
  3. Certificate of Enrollment
     (obtainable from automatic issuing machines of certificates)
    *Certificate of Admission (New Students)
  4. Transcript
     (obtainable from automatic issuing machines of certificates)
    or Certificate of Course Enrollment
      (please request at your department office)
  5. Statement on Source of Funds(available at the CIE office)
  6. Documents concerning defraying expenses
      (please obtain one amongst the followings.)
    1. Bank balance certificate
      (This can be requested at your bank)
    2. Certificate of Scholarship
      (you can request at Scholarships and Financial Assistance Section, Student Affairs Division.
      **For students receiving scholarships from private organizations, please receive the certificate from them.)
    3. A photocopy of your monthly bank statement, which shows the steady flow of income in your bank account (e.g. transfer of money from abroad etc)
    4. Written Oath for Defraying Expenses
      (available at the CIE office)
  7. (1) If you are self financing yourself  a
    (2) If your scholarship is covering your expenses  b
    (3) If someone besides yourself is covering your expenses

  8. Administrative fee: 4,000 yen, Certificate for Payment of Fee
      (available at the CIE office)

A. All submitted documents should be issued within 6 months.
B. All documents in foreign languages should be translated into Japanese.
C. In some cases, the submission of additional documents is required.
D. Application forms can be downloaded from the webpage of the Ministry of Justice (Japanese Language only). More information about changing visa status is also in the same page.
