The Student Visa status is granted to those who reside in Japan in order to study. As such, students must apply to the Immigration Bureau for a part-time work permit in order to engage in activities not covered by this status.
Regardless of the number of hours, students MUST obtain this permit before engaging in work activities. Working hours are limited to a maximum of 28 hours per week under this permit, except during summer, winter, and spring holidays when up to 8 hours per day is permitted.
With the partial revision to the Immigration Control Act, several changes have been made to the part-time work permit and application processes as of July 2010. The four main changes are as following:
[Changes to the part-time work permit]
| 1. |
All students, regardless of student status (such as regular, exchange, or non-degree/research), may engage in part-time work for up to 28 hours per week by obtaining a permit to engage in part-time work. (During summer, winter, and spring holidays, up to 8 hours a day is permitted). However, students who currently hold a part-time work permit limiting work to "a maximum of 14 hours per week" must re-new their permit through re-application in order to obtain permission for the newly instated 28 hour maximum. |
