Exchange Students (Admission of Exchange Students)
Q1. I would like to participate in a Waseda University's exchange program. What are the first steps?
First of all, please make sure whether your home institution has a student exchange agreement with Waseda or not with the student exchange coordinator at your home institution, then follow the instructions given by the coordinator. You are required to apply via your institution's international office. We are not able to accept applications directly from the students.

Q3. What kind of exchange programs does Waseda University offer?

Q4. What level of Japanese proficiency is required to participate in Waseda University's exchange program?
Language ability requirements vary from program to program. Detailed information is obtainable at our web page for exchange programs.
Q5. Is there any exchange program in which I can study using English as the medium of instruction?

Q6. What are the approximate costs for one year of academic study in Japan?
It varies with the individual, but we recommend you to prepare at least 1,000,000 JPY for one year of academic study and for living costs in Japan.
Q7. Are any scholarships available for the exchange students?
Receiving a scholarship is a competitive process. At Waseda University, there are two kinds of scholarships that only exchange student can apply for. One is theJASSO scholarship, and the other is the Monbukagakusho Scholarship which requires the university's nomination. Q8. Can I transfer my credits that I earn at Waseda University back to my home institution?
Consult with your home institution's student exchange coordinator or academic advisor.
Q9. What are the GPA requirements?
It varies depending on the programs. Please refer to our web page for exchange programsfor detailed information.
Q10. When is the deadline?
There are two admission opportunities, April or September. The deadline for the next academic year has not been fixed yet, please confirm at our web page for exchange programs in Autumn.
Q11. Can I live in a Waseda University dorm?
Presently, Waseda University provides dorms upon request of the exchange student. ( as of April 2005 ) We will send detailed information on matters such as rent, addresses after your application is officially approved.
Q12. My home institution does not have a student exchange agreement with Waseda. Am I still able to study at Waseda University? What are the necessary steps?
We suggest that you contact your home institution's international office for the most recent information on this matter. If you wish to apply to Waseda as a non-exchange(private) student, see Q13 below.
Q13. Can I apply to Waseda privately as a non-exchange student?
You may apply privately for the SILS one-year study abroad program and the Intensive Japanese Language Program. For detailed information, please visit the following web pages.

Please note that applying privately is totally different from participating in the exchange program, applicants are responsible for all costs regarding studying in Japan including full tuition.
Q14. I would like study at Waseda just for one semester. Is it possible?
We are sorry but our exchange programs are designed as a year-long program, therefore exchange students are required to attend for one academic year
Q15. I would like to study Japanese language intensively? Are there any programs?
As an exchange student, you can choose the program called the "Intensive Japanese Language Program".
In addition, there is also an intensive Japanese program held during the summer vacation.
Summer Japanese Program:
 1. With Dormitory/Homestay: 4,950 USD. Please click here.

Q16. What kind of extra curricular activities are available at Center for International Education?
We are offering various extra curricular activities such as short-term homestay experience, seminar tour, appreciation of traditional Japanese entertainment and so on. Recruitment advertising will be posted on the bulletin board of Center for International Education (located 4th floor, Bldg#22) and on the web page "Life at Waseda"located on our website.
Q17. I would like to join international clubs/groups during my stay in Japan. Where should I go? What should I do?
At Waseda, there are two main, large international clubs called "Waseda International Club(WIC)" and the "Rainbow Club(Nijinokai)". These groups provide a stage in which international students and Japanese students at Waseda interact through activities such as studying Japanese, hiking etc. If you find it difficult to adapt Japanese life during the beginning of your life in Japan, you can find Japanese friends in these kinds of groups. Q18. What kind of facilities are available for the exchange students?
