| Q1. I would like to enroll at Waseda University as a regular student or a research student. What should I do? |
| The Center for International Education accepts applications for Returnees entrance examinations, overseas students' entrance exams for both undergraduate and graduate schools, and Pre-arrival admission(Only for undergraduate schools). For details regarding each entrance exam, please access the admission link or read relevant entrance examinations' guidebooks. Please note that you have to take a graduate school examination if you wish to enter as a research student. | Q2. I would like to receive detailed information on Entrance Examinations. |
Beginning in 2007, entrance examination guidelines and application forms will only be available in electronic format on the Center for International Education website.
As a result, paper application packages and examination guidelines will no longer be distributed or sold. Entrance examination outlines and all other necessary documents will only be available by downloading them from the Admissions Page on the CIE website.
For 2007 enrollment, graduate schools will continue distributing paper examination guidelines and application packages. However, beginning with 2008 enrollment, examination guidelines and application packages for graduate schools will also be available only in electronic format on the CIE website.

| Q5. My application documents are all written in a language besides English and Japanese. Do I have to translate them? |
Please attach all relevant information translated in Japanese or English.
Moreover, any documents that are translated must be properly certified by an official organization. |

How can I obtain exams from past years? |
The Center for International Education (CIE) hands out copies of the previous year's exams for undergraduate and returnee university hopefuls at its reception counter. CIE does not have exams from past years for graduate schools. Please see each respective graduate school. Also, be aware that the School of Commerce does not release exams from past years for research students / non-degree students. |

| Q7.I would like to have my documents submit with my application return. What do I need to do? |
| When you submit documents for your application, please clearly mark the documents that you would like returned. Also we ask you to include the appropriate postage for return delivery to your country. You may also bring all the relevant documents to the Center for International Education, copy them there and submit them at that time. |

| Q9. During the summer months and other periods of the year, I would like to take short, concentrated Japanese Language Classes. Do these programs exist? |
Yes, they do.

General Entrance Examination for Overseas Students |
|
| Q1. Are there any scholarships available for overseas students at Waseda University? |
| In addition to the government related scholarship programs (State Sponsored Scholarships (KOKUHI-GAIKOKUJIN RYUGAKU SHOGAKUKIN), Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology (MONKASHO), scholarships systems from private foundations as well as scholarships offered by Waseda University itself. Please note that the scholarships introduced by Waseda University are primarily targeted at privately financed students currently holding resident visa status in Japan. These scholarships are limited in number. Scholarship related matters are managed through the Student Affairs Division's Scholarship Section but we strongly suggest that you consult with each undergraduate school or graduate school as to the details regarding scholarship including candidate recruitment. If you consult the page 116 in
the International Students' Handbook, you will be able to see what scholarships were offered in the past. Please contact to the Japanese Consulate in your vicinity for information on Embassy recommends scholarships in case you would like to apply before arriving to Japan.

| Q2.
I would like to receive a "Letter Acceptance" from a professor in order to apply for the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology (MEXT) embassy recommended, government sponsored scholarship. What should I do? |
First, you must pass the initial screening examination which is held at the Japanese embassy or consulate in your local area. Once you have successfully passed this screening, you can request a Letter of Acceptance through the Center for International Education. For more details about the process of requesting a Letter of Acceptance, please click here.

| Q4. In order to obtain a student visa, what are the necessary procedures? |
When overseas students are going through the immigration procedures, the usual process includes applying at the Japanese Consular or Japanese Embassy in your home country. The Certificate of Eligibility ( ZAIRYU SHIKAKU NINTEI SHOUMEISHO) will be issued from the Japanese Immigration Bureauand then apply for a Student Visa to the above offices. When applying for the Certificate of Eligibility, you need the following :

(2)Two photgraphs
(3)Letter of Acceptance from University
In the case that you already hold a visa to enter school or you are already living in Japan legally, you must change your visa status to a Student Visa according to the prescribed procedures. When applying you need :

| Q5. I would like to change my visa status from a Family Visa to a Student Visa. What should I do? |
| Please apply for Change of Status of Residence to the Immigration Bureau.You can download the application form from the website of the Immigration Bureau. The Center for International Education provides the form as well. Depending on your purpose, the documents to be submitted will vary. Again, please consult the Immigration Bureau directly. |

| Q8. Where and when can I get the "Letter of Acceptance" issued? |
| Each undergraduate department can and will issue the document after the second bank transfer is completed.In the case that urgency is required due to Visa application procedures, please contact the Center for International Education. |

| Q3. What languages are used at the graduate schools? |
| It depends on the graduate school. Please check with the graduate school's office. |

| Q5. I would like to contact a professor. Will you provide an email address? |
| Due to our privacy policy, we cannot provide any personal information or email addresses through the Center for International Education. You can access researcher's information through the following web site: Waseda University Researcher Database. Some professors provide contact information on the page. You can contact through those offered information in that case. |

| Q6. Do I have to first study as a research student before entering into the Master's degree program? |
| At Waseda University, you can enter into the Master's degree programs without studying as a research student if you passed the entrance exam and have completed 16 years of formal education in countries overseas. |

| Q7. How many courses per week do I have to take in order to obtain a Student Visa as a research student? |
| You must take 7 subjects (10 hours of lectures a week) or more in order to be eligible for a Student Visa as per the Immigration Bureau's guidelines. |

| Q8. When should we pay the entrance exam fee? |
| It is not necessary to pay the entrance exam fee when you submit your application to the CIE. Each graduate department conducts its own written examination and interview. Thus, you can pay the entrance exam fee directly to the graduate department of your choice when you do the necessary procedures to sign up for their exam and interview. |

| Q2. How can I take the entrance examination if I am not living in Japan at the time of application? |
| You need to come to Japan to take the exam. In order to apply for the Visa, you may need to have an examination permit card which is issued by the university (depending on the country). For those who need the examination permit card, we recommend that you apply at least 2 months ahead of examination period. You must forward to the Center for International Education the following documents in order to receive the card: your completed application (please copy the application form including your education history) (photograph not necessary) and documents certify your academic history (academic transcript, diploma). A short term visa for the purpose of writing the entrance examination will be issued at The Japanese Embassy or Consular Office in your country after you submit your valid passport and a tax statement along with the examination permit card. (Required documents may vary by countries.) |

| Q3. Can I ask you to apply for a Visa for me? |
| Please understand that only the person him/herself entering the undergraduate school can apply for the Visa.(Pre- arrival admissions are an exception). |

| Q4. Can students which will be graduating from four year universities or two year colleges in Japan or have graduated from these universities use the undergraduate entrance examination system for overseas students? |
| If you have graduated from a Japanese higher education institution or you will be graduating from one, you cannot use the examination system for overseas students. Returnee Students |
| Q2. I would like to apply for the Returnees Entrance Examination. Do I need a letter of recommendation? Can I submit a letter of recommendation in a format that doesn't follow Waseda University's format? |
| You need to have a letter of recommendation from the principal or a teacher of the high school that you last attended. If possible, we ask you to use the Waseda University format which you can download from here. If you cannot use the University's format, submit the alternative form stating what the Waseda University format requires you to mention. |

| Q3. Can I be accepted as a transfer student if I am a Returnee student? |
| No returnee students can transfer to Waseda University. You will apply as a first year student. |

| Q4. Can I apply for the returnee student examination without any guardians coming back with me? |
| At Waseda University, there are no restrictions related to returnee students applying for entrance examinations or overseas residency with a guardian as a condition if other application conditions have been met. | Q5. I graduated from an international school within Japan. Can I use the Returnee Entrance Examination system? |
| Unfortunately, you cannot use the undergraduate entrance examination system for returnee students. You must apply as a regular applicant. Please refer to the Admissions Center web page on the regular examination: The Admission Center

| Q6. Are the results from the New SAT test necessary when applying as a returnee? |
| For those who have received education in the U.S. and wish to apply for the exam as a returnee, SAT scores are necessary. Beginning in 2006 academic year, we will recognize the results from both the former SAT exam and the New SAT exam. |

| Q7. In the application documents, there is an allowance for overseas secondary education institutions that are 2 years or more in length. But what about overseas secondary education institutions in which you graduate less than 2 years? Can I qualify to take the examination? |
| In order to be qualified to write the examination, you need to attend secondary education institutions for 2 years or longer in countries other than Japan. In the case where the student graduates faster than the normal period (under 2 years), you are not qualified either. However, in order to be qualified to write the examination, you need to attend secondary education institutions for 2 years or longer in countries other than Japan. In the case where the student graduates faster than the normal period (under 2 years), you are not qualified either. However, you will be qualified in the case that you earned academic records equivalent to 2 academic years when you completed a final year, even though the total number of days is less than 2 years. |

| Q8. After graduating from a higher education institution overseas and continuing on to the university, am I still eligible for the examination? |
| It is stipulated that you must apply within one year after return home or while residing overseas, graduating from high school and continuing on to the local University. Application procedures also apply while you are attending University. Please be aware that there is no transfer system for this university returnee students entrance exams thus students become 1st year students. Also, it is necessary to submit a student registration certificate and a certificate of the period of registration proving that you are indeed studying at university. |

| Q1. I would like to participate in a Waseda University's exchange program. What are the first steps? |
| First of all, please make sure whether your home institution has a student exchange agreement with Waseda or not with the student exchange coordinator at your home institution, then follow the instructions given by the coordinator. You are required to apply via your institution's international office. We are not able to accept applications directly from the students. |

| Presently, Waseda University provides dorms upon request of the exchange student. ( as of April 2005 ) We will send detailed information on matters such as rent, addresses after your application is officially approved. |

| Q12. My home institution does not have a student exchange agreement with Waseda. Am I still able to study at Waseda University? What are the necessary steps? |
| We suggest that you contact your home institution's international office for the most recent information on this matter. If you wish to apply to Waseda as a non-exchange(private) student, see Q13 below. |

| Q13. Can I apply to Waseda privately as a non-exchange student? |

| Q17. I would like to join international clubs/groups during my stay in Japan. Where should I go? What should I do? |
| At Waseda, there are two main, large international clubs called "Waseda International Club(WIC)" and the "Rainbow Club(Nijinokai)". These groups provide a stage in which international students and Japanese students at Waseda interact through activities such as studying Japanese, hiking etc. If you find it difficult to adapt Japanese life during the beginning of your life in Japan, you can find Japanese friends in these kinds of groups.
